Song of the open road questions and answers

(A3) The poet has used many describing words such as 'healthy' in this poem.

Make a list and classify them as -

Answer:

(a) For the world: sufficient

(b) For himself: light hearted, healthy, free, strong, content, good fortune

(c) For the road: open, long brown path

(A4) (i) Read the expression ‘old delicious burdens.’
A burden cannot be delicious. The poet has used this combination of words to express that he has many sweet memories of the people and places which he would like to remember forever. The poet has used seemingly contradictory expressions to convey the meaning that his heart is full of sweet memories of good and kind people. Though he wants to be free from any type of attachment, he wants to cherish these sweet memories in his heart forever.

The expression contains opposite ideas that make it seem absurd or

unlikely, although it may be true. This is called ‘Paradox.’

(ii) The road in the poem does not mean only the road to travel. The poet wants to suggest the road of life. Explain the metaphor with the help of the poem.

Answer:

The road to travel here, metaphorical meaning is,journey of life. Life is a long journey. In our life we have our family and friends. We don't know what will happen in future. We have both pleasant and sad situations in our life. We have to work hard ,face any kind of  challenging situations and find success. The life is going on. So we should be strong enough to lead the life.

(iii) Free Verse: Free Verse is a poetry that does not rhyme or have a regular rhythm. The features of Free Verse are-

It is a literary device that is free from limitations of regular meter or rhythm, does not rhyme with fixed forms, and still it provides an artistic expression. In this way, the poet can give his own shape to a poem as he desires and can use various poetic devices to create the effect he considers suitable for the piece.

As Free Verse gives greater freedom for choosing words and conveying their meanings to readers, it is free from artificiality of a typical poetic expression. This technique is commonly used in modern poetry.

Remember -

(a) Although Free Verse requires no metre, rhyme or other traditional poetic techniques, it is the use of internal pattern of sounds, the choice of exact words and their chosen places are the factors which attribute the Free Verse, its lyrical or rhythmic beauty.

 (b) Free Verse is completely different  from ‘Blank Verse’ which essentially has to occur in iambic pentameter. Blank verse is poetry written with regular metrical but unrhymed lines. It is described as 'the most common' form of English poetry which has been influential since the 16th century.

(iv) There are certain words that are repeated in the poem.

For example, ‘no more’ (Line 7).

Find out other similar expressions. Explain the effect they have created in the poem.

Answer:

Open road:

line 1 &7. Indicates the path in life is open wide for the poet./ Person to make any choice he wants

Before me:

looking at the road ahead, future life

Henceforth I:

4,5 the poet conveys- from that point onwards- he had decided to do or not do certain things.

Good fortune:

good fortune or destiny is not external. It is within one's power

I know:

line 11,12- this  his full awareness

I carry: 12,13- indicates the weight of burdens though they may be delicious.

They are: line 10- constellation or powerful people, belongs where they are.

(v) The use of personal pronoun 'I' is evident and prominent in this poem.

Give reasons.

The repetition of I shows that the poet is confident and able to take his life forward without support. He is sure that he doesn't need luck or well wishes of friends. He is confident to his own capabilities.

(A5) (i) With the help of the following points, write a poetic appreciation of the poem ‘Song of the Open Road’.

• About the poem / poet and the title: The poem is written by an American poet ,Walt Whitman, the father of free verse,  ‘The song of the open road’ is about optimism and confidence. The title of the poem indicates that there are opportunities open for everyone and we are free to choose any work to do. The open road here is about freedom, it's song of freedom.

Theme :

Liberty (freedom) is the major theme of the poem. The poet tries to encourage the readers to enjoy their life in freedom to lead to their goals with their work as they wish like a civilized citizen. Optimism is also the theme of the poem where he asks the readers to work without giving attention towards the critics. He also asks the readers to remain away from destiny (fate). He asks the readers that they are the owner of their destiny.  He tells the readers to be independent and work for their future.

Poetic style: The poem is written in the form of free verse. There is no rhyme scheme.

It is one of the best examples of dramatic monologue.

Poetic devices:

metaphor, alliteration, repetition, paradox are the figures of speech used in the poem.

Special feature:

Easy to understand. Simplicity is the major feature of this poem that readers can easily understand the message of the poet. Meaning of life in simple words which makes the poem special.

moral/ message:

Everyone should always respect the freedom of others and welcome our freedom with whole heart.

We should always believe in ourselves.

Try to be independent

Your opinion:

In my opinion the poem is a motivational poem. It encourages us to work for our future without expecting anyone's support or fate. We are free to choose our own dream. We should welcome the opportunities in our life.

(ii) Write four to six lines of Free Verse on the topic ‘The road that leads tomy college’. Express that it is the road to knowledge and bright future.

You may begin like this:

Every day I tread with the bag of books …

With the hope or dream

I promise myself I am ready for tomorrow

Will achieve any how the decided goal

It's my strong desire and firm determination.

(iii) Write a blog on the following topic.

(a) Man is free by birth.

The great philosopher Rousseau had quoted a statement,  'man has been born free'. He is free to do the things whatever he wishes at his childhood. No one restricts him to do so. As he grows up certain limitations are forced on him. But these limitations are acceptable for him. These limitations are good in favour of social cohesion. But when other restrictions   someone forces, suppress his freedom.

As the child grows his freedom is taken away from its parents. They always guide their children, what to do or what should not do. The feelings of the children and their likes and dislikes are not counted. They become bound to follow the flow of others.

They also lose their own dreams to fulfill parents dreams. They lose their freedom and tie them in the restrictions of those liked by their people. They look as they are free but mentally they are not free. If they will happy with their work, they enjoy their freedom.

I would like to support the freedom of the children. But the freedom of making life not of destroying it. What do you think?

(iv) Expand the ideas suggested in the following lines:

(a) All roads lead to Rome.

Ans:  It's true that during the Roman Empire, the road system was built in such a way ,a person could take any road,he would reach Rome.

There are different ways of living life. Or different methods to get success in life , if their results would be the same then what matters.

For example people worship to the different God, but there is only one almighty. Their prayers go to the One only. In the time of problems many people come together and try to find solutions. Their methods would be different but their intention is the  same.

The team work is great one. They work together in one place ,even they are totally different from each other.

(b) A man without liberty is a body without a soul.

Answer:

The freedom of thinking and freedom of expression is the most important freedom. The physical freedom means freedom of movement. But if mind is not free then it's not freedom in true sense

Those who enjoyed freedom of expression during freedom struggle were sent behind the bar. But they themselves proved the freedom of mind is necessary for changing the society into ideal one. The freedom fighters taught us to fight for our own freedom. They thought freely ,hence they knew the colonialism, and they awaken others minds get united to fight. Thus we became free from the foreign government.

The peace of mind is more important than the peace outside. For that everyone should have liberty, because without liberty, the body is without soul.

(A6) (i) Take help from the sources available on the internet and make a list of proverbs and quotations about ‘road.’

Answer:

Short is the road that leads from fear to hatred. ...

The wind sweeps the road clean. ...

It is a long road that has no turning. ...

There are a thousand roads to every wrong.

If you want to travel fast use the old roads. ...

(ii) Read the poem ‘The Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost.:

My Mother at Sixty Six poem appreciation

My Mother at Sixty Six poem  critical appreciation

Kamala Das' poetry is most frequently recognized as confession booth poetry. "My Mother at Sixty Six" can
additionally be recognized thusly. She is as open and uninhibited in this sonnet as she is in her other well known
confession booth sonnets, for example, "A presentation". She portrays her mom's maturing face and her
response to it decisively. She thinks about her mom's face to that of a
carcass. This is a fairly bleak picture, yet that shouldn't astonish us. As we have said previously, Kamala
Das isn't hesitant to put off her perusers a little assuming it fills the general need of making her sonnet as
legitimate as could really be expected. Thus makes this distinct correlation with show how the most common way of maturing
promptly raises the apprehension about losing her mom in her psyche.
She likewise portrays how that dread upsets her such a lot of that she is compelled to dismiss her consideration.
This dismissing doesn't represent a getting some distance from her obligation towards her mom, yet
just a getting some distance from her own aggravation filled feelings. Despite the fact that her mom is presently not a youthful
lady, she is as yet excellent. To that end the second time around, she looks at her mom's face
with that of the moon on a colder time of year night. This picture isn't dismal, yet wonderful. Nonetheless, both
pictures are utilized to flag the finish of something. The cadaver all the more straightforwardly resolves the issue of
human existence reaching a conclusion.
In any case, the way that the writer has determined that the moon which her mom's face looks like is the
moon found in winter shows that colder time of year is likewise utilized here to flag the finish of a year - another year
that a man has lived, and one that is attracting him nearer to the furthest limit of his life also. Accordingly, even
however the two pictures appear to be disparate, they represent exactly the same thing. They together
represent the quickness of human existence and the conviction of death. This is the artist's greatest dread - that
her mom will pass on, and she won't have the ability to prevent it from occurring.
As a kid, it is regular that one should feel feeble. Notwithstanding, as a grown-up, as a solid and
free lady, as a prominent artist, Kamala Das is in no way, shape or form weak. Yet, where demise is
worried, there is no other viable option for her. She fears that the deficiency of her mom can never be supplanted
in any capacity. In any case, she is resolved not to cripple her mom. So she grins and says
farewell. Yet, one can in a real sense hear her deplorable. It is this concealing of her aggravation that makes
the sonnet lovely and interesting.

The Daffodils poem appreciation

Daffodils appreciation

A flower basically catches our attention by its tone, balance and aroma. Furthermore when there is a group of flowers we will undoubtedly be overpowered by an unbelievable sensation of ecsatasy. Wordsworth offers such a marvelous moment with us.

Just like his propensity he was meandering alone some place in Lake District when he dropped by an uncommon sight - a huge number of daffodils moving under the effect of breeze by the side of a lake. Daffodils are common little yellow blossoms; however their being in such overflow and in such a happy state of mind established a profound connection with Wordsworth's cognizance.

The memory of these daffodils turned into a method for reestablishing the artist's liveliness and energy. The poem is an investigation of the significance of Nature. It brings an abundance to the table to cautious eyes and brain; things are not so separated and discrete as they appear, they are necessary to our cognizance and being.

Life poem appreciation

Appreciation of Poem Life

  • Title: Life

  • Poet: Charlotte Bronte

  • Theme/Central idea: This is a motivational and inspirational poem. The poet says that nothing is long-lasting in this life and every one of the terrible things in life will go and beneficial things will follow. This poem gives a solid message of trust. The poet advises us to have confidence and trust and courageously bear every one of our difficulties and conquer our concerns with fortitude.

  • Rhyme Scheme: abcb in the first stanza, dede in all the remaining stanzas.

  • Figure of Speech: ‘What though death at times steps in’. The figure of speech is Personification.

  • Special Feature/Implied meaning, etc.: This poem is exceptionally rousing and hopeful. It is an extremely certain and glad poem that gives us boldness and trust. It advises us that regardless of whether there are issues in life nothing is extremely durable and there will be better days ahead.

  • Favourite lines: For gloriously, victoriously, Can courage quell despair!
  • Why I like/don’t like the poem: I like the poem since it gives me trust, strength and boldness.
